Wear a red ribbon today and remember those innocent children, men and women, those who are dying, those who are fighting and those who are still ignorant about this disease - it's better to be safe than sorry.

A true account of a HIV testing in KL

Here is a blogger who won an MAC Red Ribbon Media Award for his post, Guide to HIV Testing in Malaysia.

It is a very thorough account of how to go about having HIV testing. He also explains the procedure and pretty much covered up what you need to know about the different sorts of tests as well.

I believe anonymous testing should be adhered as well. For me personally, I must admit, I have been in the PJ Health Office Centre in Kelana Jaya with my group members to collect brochures and posters for our campaign. The staff there was nice and one of them was instructed to assist me in getting the database to be charted into graphs for our exhibition.

As I followed him into his room and watched his computer churned out a timetable, I was aghast to know there were NAMES of people in FULL including their IC and age.

They were HIV-infected people.

I saw a name with the age in the early fiftees.

And then my eyes glanced to another who was only 7.

I wondered, is this an intrusion of privacy and against your right for an anonymous testing?

Plus, if so I must add, this is the database for those infected in Petaling Jaya itself.

Nevertheless, the staff never did mail me the charts for the STD exhibition.

It would be interesting to know how were the rates like despite on-going efforts to eduate the public.

But it seems HIV/AIDS will remain a continuous battle to shed the public's perception that they are invisible to the disease. When in fact they might be walking down the streets bumping shoulders with one another and not knowing they might have passed the disease subsequently.

If you're in a new relationship, please always go for a STD and/or HIV/AIDS test. You might at least prevent the circle from coming in full.

Drug company Merck & Co. designs HPV vaccine

According to news resource CNN.com, the drug Gardasil designed to prevent cervical cancer has been proven to block the infections of two types of HPV namely the variant HPV-16 and HPV-18.

It has also been recorded women who were give those vaccine were found to have not developed painful and threatening lesions that can turn cancerous and lead to cervical cancer.

However, the ethical issue that has been brought up is concerned with the widely proposed idea of having the vaccine given to school children as young as 10 up to high school. Some parents think that children will have the notion that they are permitted to have sex after being vaccinated if so.

I kinda miss organizing the campaign come to think of it. It's like something's been missing from part of you. The planning, scheduling, and all. I must say, the hands-on part may be tiring but I have to say, I enjoyed the adrenaline rush from it. If we had a chance to do it all over again, I would jump at that chance, knowing we could have better it every single moment.

We, or more like, I, was hoping Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir could have at least grace our launch but she didn't R.S.V.P so it was alright.

One of my fave highlights was knowing she had read my email would truly be a memory behold.

I'd hope she would be proud of us truly. But, I know Datin Salmah was and without her, we wouldn't have called our campaign a success either.

Did I mention my other favourite highlight was Kak Salmah? I love her to bits =) I might volunteer and assist her for Malaysian AIDS Council coming October 15th for World Vision's Famine event. As much as she had supported us, the least I could do, is the same.

What next?

The first week after the campaign ended, had us all chilling and basking in the moment of stress-free. Yea, please give us another day... yes and another...

There is still a HUGE amount of paperwork for us to do ya'll!

Not only that, some of us have been offered to volunteer and aid Datin Salmah during the Worldvision's Famine event by giving short lectures to participants which would be held on Oct 15th if I'm not mistaken. So, looking at our schedule, we would be delighted to be of help.

Anyhow, we have to compile our final report of what we had done before, during and after the campaign. Plus we have to sipher through our questionnaires and code them and run SPSS so we could know what you folks out there think of our campaign so far.

I must say, some of the comments people had left with us, had touched us pretty much. Oh, and I musn't forget that ONE guy in our workshop who commented to the question posted by Datin Salmah of What made you come to this STD campaign? to which he replied (in the most accurate manner I could remember),

"Before this campaign, I knew nothing about STD and after attending this campaign it is a good effort put together by this students"

I swear my heart went all out to him at that point.

It doesn't matter that we had to use our own money, nor not being able to get famous (femes) local celebs nor putting together a big bash and a ball of fun, we still manage to pull this one.

And mind you, this are the OWN efforts of ten girls in the committee team. No hiring anyone except for printing purposes; down from the designing process to getting the freebies.

I must highlight some of the good and the bad that we were told of. Laugh at your own expense.

The constructive and good comments
1. It was good enough
2. Make a lot more games
3. More exciting (I must admit we forgot about our Battle of the Sexes quiz as we were of tight schedule)
4. Make it in English (with reference to the video by Red Communication - hey I'm sure you guys can understand simple BM, no?)

1. By being more perverted (?!?!)
2. By giving more freebies (the future sponsors should hear from this!)
3. More publicity to other schools, colleges (well, we had gone to promote to Metropolitan students who allowed us in, the other colleges didn't allow but to stick our posters up. So, maybe it wasn't a strategic area the posterboards)
4. wo pu che tau (translation: I don't know)
5. my lil Johnny says always wear @ condom (with a condom scribbling, someone wasn't paying attention during the workshop..... nevertheless, nice artwork)

4th and last day - Workshops

Time: 10 - 12pm
Workshop #1

The first workshop was manned by Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar. Ms Yeo and Ms. Sim both got the students up and interacting with one another with activities such as, what matters most as your view as a male/female. Surprisingly, the males answered care, love, honesty whereas the females answered money, car, etc. That's a change amongst the gender's perception these days.

The theme that was mainly concentrated upon is youth and relationships and it was pinpointed over and over again that one should not be pressurised to have sex unless one is ready. Even so, precautions should be taken up.

They were also were instructed to form small groups where they drew up their ideas on the mahjong paper provided and each leader who went up for a short presentation were rewarded with small gifts. See if your picture is up here!

The students also had a short cross-road junction game in which they line dup in a line to decide whether they should answer a yes or a no to each situation given to them.

Time: 1-3pm

Workshop #2

Datin Salmah, a Education Training Officer from Malaysian AIDS Council, lends us her time to conduct a workshop as well. She got the students to form a line as well and did the cross-road junction role. She awarded some students with MAC's special badges when they answered the questions with their own opinions.

After that, a video done by Red Communications was played with characters enacted with different roles in different scenarios that were applicable to real life. After each pauses, she proceeded to prompt the audience of what they had watched and what was wrongly depicted.

When the video was over, Datin Salmah gave an educational approach on how to properly put on a condom using a penis model with May, a student, showing us how so.

Datin Salmah also introduced us to the female diaphragm and dental dams, two other preventive measures besides the condom that can be used to protect one from STD and/or HIV/AIDS.

After the session was over, a short quiz was asked again to see if students remembered facts and information.

At about 3pm, Susan directed the students outside to catch the RED 104.9 cruisers who came to distribute more freebies and students continued to participate in more games.

3rd day - Symposium "Youth & Sexual Reproductive Health"

Date: 14th September 2005

For today's itenary, we had invited three speakers who would be sharing the floor. We have to say that the response for the symposium was very encouraging and we hope it would continue till the last day tomorrow. We had anticapated a head count of 130 students in the hall.

The first speaker was Mrs Doris John who is the manager for the Family Planning Association of Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan. She gave us a brief rundown of the family planning history back from the 1930s onwards where family planning was once known as 'birth control'. It was enlightening to know that back in those days, no one knew the right measures of planning a family that was why infant mortality was high because mothers were not nurtured properly before her body was ready to carry another foetus. Not only that, she advised the floor of getting counselling and eventhough the FPA are not allowed to distribute family planning methods as it is against the law (which should be made legal), she welcomed everyone to call if they had queries.

The second speaker was Dr. Teng, who is a practising gynaecologist from SJMC. She had the crowd listened with all ears as she spoke from her experience of having very young mothers; as young as 14, coming into labour. There were sighs and shocks expressed. She continued to empower young women to listen to themselves to say no and not give into situations when boyfriends pressurised their partners into having sex. "When there is no sex, is safe sex"she emphasized as well. She also mentioned some types of STD and also the usage of condoms that could help prevent from contracting STD. Some students were eager to ask her questions to debunk 'rumours' they heard.

The last speaker was Ms Megan, a counselor from Taylor's College SJ who spoke about behavioral counselling. She added on about how one would be counselled on when one comes in with enquiries.

After the symposium, the crowd was treated to another round of Q&A where they were asked questions about the talks.

As the symposium was going on, outside the Lecture Theatre 2, we had a booth manned by staff of Subang Jaya Medical Centre who gave us check-ups on our Body mass index and blood pressure. Students took this opportunity to go for check-ups as well. Goodie bags by Johnson & Johnson were given out to participants of the symposium.

2nd day - The Talks

Date: 13th Sept 2005

For Tuesday's activity, we invited Dato' Dr. Low Bin Tick who runs a Klinik Kulit Kuala Lumpur, at Jalan Raja Chulan for the 10am slot. Due to the campaign's timing, we faced problems bringing in the students as there were clash of classes. Nevertheless, we had to be persuasive and that is what we had learnt for, these three years of our degree. By half an hour, slowly, students strolled in and Dato' Dr. Low could begin his talk.

As the emcee, I warned the audience for potential graphical elements.

Dato' Dr. Low did instill caution and fear into the students when it comes to STD; if you do not use protective measures, the grossly pictures are evidence of what can happen to one. And the pictures are of his patients' that came to his clinic over the years.

STD and HIV/AIDS does not discriminate gender nor race; even babies are infected once the mother passes the virus.

From the evaluation form, one of the comments were left to say:

"I'm so scared that it makes me want to visit a doctor"

It is not of the objective of our campaign to instill fear but if it does to a significant degree that it would prevent youths from having unprotected sex then the number of STD in the country may decrease. This is the same per say to Singapore's shock tactic of introducing posters of patients with graphical elements ie. sexual organs infected with the virus.

After Dato' Dr. Low's talk, it was Mr. Surain Azhar. Surain, who came along with his friend Along who helped him with the props, continued the session into 12-something pm on HIV/AIDS.

The students learnt there were 'window period', the difference of HIV/AIDS and more.

Even after the session, to test if the students had actively listened during the two talks, the committee members for the STD Awareness campaign ran some quizzes.

The students who participated in the quizzes were rewarded with vouchers as incentives.

1st day - Launch

Glitches, nervous breakdown, blood, sweat and tears; it was time for the real thing and the anticipation rose to its maximum level.

We expected VIPs to arrive mid-10ish am but somehow we were proven wrong when they arrive at 9.30am; just when we were completing our first rehearsal in the morning.

The members went skittering around looking for students to fill the vastly empty hall.

Ten minutes later our nerves calmed down when some students came in to fill the hall. And so the launch begin.

The ceremony was simple due to the limitation of budget and manpower; but we could only hope that everyone could see the effort we had put in.

And everyone was praying that the opening ceremony of 'officiating' the campaign better go well or we would suffer in embarassment. The bunting did roll out as it was suppose to.

"It happened to me" - A testimonial

It is just ironically when we started to embark on this campaign that I found out from a friend of a friend that she got tested for genital warts.

Let's call her 'Carrie' after my favourite character on tv.

She told a few of her close friends including me about her condition since then.

In a way, she did not ask to be judged, but to judge the situation that you choose to be in.

She, as closely as I could narrate her story to be, chose to tell her side of the story though anonymously, so as young women like her, would not follow her footsteps.

She was like any other girl out there; she met her new love and was excited about this guy.

They spoke about their past history, their background and whether or not there would be a right time to be in a sexual relationship as well.

She assumed, despite the number of sexual partners he had, he was 'clean' and it let slipped her mind that he should get tested.

When she did not voice out as he did not use a condom, ultimately it was the choice she was made to bear responsibility as well.

Within three months of the relationship, she found a growth and went to a clinic. The clinic directed her to a gynaecologist who then ran a pap smear test on her to which she found out the result.

She has then been using contraception and undergoing pap smear tests for two years now as the virus that caused genital warts called Human Papillomavirus, increases the risk of getting cervical cancer.

She is more careful now; and her symptoms of warts have since remained dormant. But symptoms may appear once in a while, she was told.

It is her story that moved me to direct a still-shot video for our campaign. Maybe the message and the word could be spread but let's not spread the disease.

It has been a whirlwind road

Organizing a campaign feels like, to me, going into a battlefield with your group of men (which in my case, my ladies) with ideas and putting forth strategies on solving problems and miscellaneous situation.

Nevertheless, we all have to keep our cool sometimes, and however much frustrated and stress we get, we still have to maintain that professionalism in place.

Believe me, you'll definitely get a picture on how going into event management would be like.

The only complain I have is that with a noble and societal cause of campaign as such, we still could do with more support if organizations come forward to lend us with some monetary support.

Right now, we are raising our own funds to run our own campaign and it can be tirelessly feeling fruitless at times, we ain't giving up hope just yet.

There is so much more we can offer but the baricades and hurdles we have to overcome are still right in front of us and that wears us down.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Awareness Campaign

As a representative of ten girls, allow me to introduce ourselves; we, the Final Year Persuasive Communication students of Taylor's College Petaling Jaya, are proud to be organizing an awareness campaign on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).

In this day and age, with much technology advancement and growth in Malaysia, the topic of sex or sexual intercourse is considered taboo in our society. Therefore, in depth knowledge regarding Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) amongst people is rather uncommon.

Furthermore, we should not disregard an issue which has been swept under the rug; let's face the fact, more and more young adults are having sex and the worrying trend is that they are having unprotected sex.

In addressing this issue, the final year students of the Bachelor of Communications (Persuasive Communication) (Hons) Degree programme of Taylor’s College will be organizing a STD awareness campaign in Taylor’s College Subang Jaya from 12th September to 15th September 2005.

This campaign will be able to create awareness amongst the target audiences by providing them with necessary information regarding the issue. It will also give them the opportunity to discuss these issues openly not only with friends but with medical experts. Besides that, this campaign will also emphasize the importance of practicing safe sex.

Our target audience is college students who are between the age of 18 and 35 years.

And, in order to carry out the “STD: Stand Guard Campaign Listen, Learn & Live”, we have outlined objectives in line with the identified problems.

1. To raise the level of awareness of STD amongst the target audiences
- Educate them on symptoms of STD.
- Introduce them to the different types of STD including AIDS/HIV.
- Inform them that not all STD can be cured.

2. Educate the target on where to go for help
- Inform them of centers to seek treatment.
- Inform them of focus groups or NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) that provide counseling and advice.

3. To empower women to engage in safe sex
- Empower women by stressing on their rights in a sexual relationship.
- Encourage women to negotiate safe sex.
- Encourage partners/spouse to be tested for STD.
- Instill responsibility among men in a sexual relationship.

4. To encourage health-seeking behavior among target audience on STD
- Seek early detection and treatment.
- Practice abstinence, safe sex or being in a monogamous relationship to prevent STD.
- Encourage college students to take the initiative to find out more about STD.

Preventive Measures

How can a condom save my life?
Using condoms during vaginal, oral and anal sex help to reduce the spread of STDs though they are not 100% safe. During intercourse, a condom acts as a barrier to keep semen, blood or vaginal fluids from passing from one person to another.

Relationship

Monogamy (Have sexual contact with only one partner)
Shall not have sexual contact with anyone who has visible sores or genital rashes.

Abstinence
Delay having sexual relationships as long as ever.

Checkups
Have regular checkups for STDs.

Know
Learn the symptoms of STDs and seek medical help as soon as possible if notice any symptoms.

Treatment
Gonorrhoea

Antibiotic in tablet, liquid or injection form

Chlamydia

Antibiotic in tablet, liquid or injection form.
It is important to finish any course of treatment for Chlamydia. If treatment is interrupted, it may be necessary to start again from the beginning.

Syphilis

A 2-week course of penicillin injections or, in some cases, antibiotic tablets or capsules.

Herpes

Take tablets that reduce the severity of genital herpes infection within 72 hours of the start of the symptoms.
Recurrent infections often do not require treatment as herpes cannot be cured completely and the virus will always remains in the body.

Genital Warts (HPV)

Brown liquid namely podophylin, which is painted on the wart(s) and must be washed off 4 hours later.
Freezing the warts or laser treatment.
What to do when diagnosed with STD?
Begin treatment immediately, take full course of medications, and follow your physician’s advice.
Do not breastfeed a baby or use breast milk to feed a baby.
Notify all recent sexual partners and urge them to get medical checkups.
Avoid sexual activity while under treatment for an STD.
Have a follow-up test to be sure the STD has been successfully treated.

What about HIV?

HIV is passed on in the sexual fluids or blood of an infected person, so if infected blood or sexual fluid gets into your body, you can become infected.
HIV can be transmitted by either:
- having sexual intercourse with an infected person,
- sharing needles used to inject drugs with an infected person,
- being born to a mother who has HIV, or
- having medical treatment using infected blood transfusions.

HIV and AIDS

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS is a serious condition in which the body’s defences against some illnesses are broken down.
The length of time between being infected with HIV and being diagnosed with AIDS can be very variable. These days, there are many drugs that can be used to help people with HIV for a long time.

STD and HIV

Having a STD can increase your risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV. When there are breaks in the skin, STDs can cause biological changes that may make HIV transmission more likely.

HIV-infected individuals who are infected with another STD are 3-5 times more likely to contract or transmit the virus through sexual contact.

Is there a cure?

There is no cure for HIV. HIV can only be controlled once a person is infected in order to make a person with HIV to stay healthy or longer, but the virus in the body cannot be cured completely.

What is STD?
STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease (sometimes called Sexually Transmitted Infection). It is an infection which caught by having sexual contact, namely vaginal, oral, or anal sex with someone who is infected. Some STDs such as Herpes and HPV can be caught by touching the infected areas of someone ’s body and then touching your own genitals (private parts).

Types of STD
Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is usually transmitted by unprotected penetrative sex, but can occasionally be transmitted by touching someone else ’s genitals and then touching your own without washing your hands.

Symptoms of infection may show up at anytime between 1 and 14 days after exposure, or no symptoms at all.

Men are much more likely than women to have symptoms.

Symptoms for Men

a yellow or white discharge from the penis
irritation and/ or discharge from the anus
inflammation of the testicles and prostate gland

Symptoms for Woman

a change in vaginal discharge which may increase and change to a yellow or greenish colour and develop a strong smell
a pain or burning sensation when passing urine
irritation and/ or discharge from the anus

Chlamydia

Chlamydia can be transmitted through unprotected sex with someone who ’s infected. Children can become infected during childbirth.
Symptoms often show up 1 to 3 weeks after infection, but can be much longer, and at anytime. There can be no symptoms at all.
Men are more likely to notice symptoms than women. Most women will have no symptoms at all.

Symptoms for Men

a discharge from the penis which may be white or cloudy and stain underwear
pain and/ or a burning sensation when passing urine
a painful swelling and irritation in the eyes

Symptoms for Women

a slight increase in vaginal discharge which caused by the cervix becoming inflamed
a need to pass urine more often or pain on passing urine
lower abdominal pain
pain during sex
irregular menstrual bleeding
a painful swelling and irritation in the eyes

Syphilis

Syphilis can be transmitted through unprotected sex with someone who ’s infected. Children can become infected during childbirth.
Symptoms can be difficult to recognise and can take up to 3 months to develop. On average, symptoms first appear within 21 days of infection.

Symptoms for Men

painless sore which appears on the place where the bacteria entered the body such as the penis, foreskin, anus or mouth
painless sore which appears on the place where the bacteria entered the body such as the vaginal lips, clitoris, around the urethra, anus, mouth, or on the cervix.

Herpes

There are 2 types if the genital herpes virus whereby both are infectious:
Type I infects the mouth or nose.
Type II infects the genital and anal area.
Genital herpes is passed on via skin contact with an infected person. The virus affects the areas where it enters the body. This can be by kissing, penetrative sex, and oral sex.
Time between infection and first symptoms is usually between 1 and 26 days.

Symptoms

an itching or tingling sensation in the genital or anal area
small fluid-filled blisters which will burst and leave small sores which can be very painful but in time they will dry out, scab over and heal
pain when passing urine, if it passes over any of the open sores
a flu-like illness, backache, headache, swollen glands or fever

Genital Warts (HPV)

Genital warts are spread via skin-to-skin contact, vaginal or anal sex or genital contact.
It usually takes between 1 and 3 months for warts to appear on genitals after the infection.

Symptoms

pinkish or white small lumps or larger cauliflower-shaped lumps on the genital area
warts appear around the vulva, the penis, the scrotum or the anus and will cause itchiness but are usually painless
in women genital warts can develop inside the vagina and on the cervix which may cause slight bleeding
